Neeraj : I saw your section on Tequila, and I had a question. You mentioned Tequila, Mescal and rattlesnake for body, but where do worms fit in to the scheme? I saw a variety of Mescal, and they claimed they had TWO worms, and I saw them in the bottle. (looked nasty to me). Where do worms fit into the scheme is my question, and if you have the answer, I will be grateful.
TulleeGuru : Hi. Firstly, there is no worm in tequila. The worm is only found in mezcal, which is made along the lines of tequila but from the many varieties of mezcal plants and not from the blue agave (from whence cometh tequila). Secondly, the worm in mezcal is owed to a bottler and trader called Jacobo Lozano P ez who discovered in tasting, that the maguey (agave) worms gave the mezcal a different flavor, since when the plant was cut for cooking a lot of these creatures remained in the heart during production. This is how he decided to give his product a distinctive marketing touch, adding a worm to the beverage and including with the bottle a small sack with salt, seasoned with the same larva, dehydrated and ground. Expert opinion however suggests that the only use of the worm besides as a marketing gimmick is to mask the chemical taste of poorly produced mezcal. Our advice, stay off the worms, stick to Salma Hayek.

Morigato : In India, what is the drinking age, the legal age to consume alcohol? In the USA, it is 21. The USA is probably the only country in the world with a drinking age of 21.

TulleeGuru : In India alcohol is a state subject and all legislation is therefore made by each individual states (i've lost count of how many we have - at last count 26 and mounting). It varies as far as I can tell from 18 (in Bangalore) to 25 (in Delhi), which would be the approx. range.
